MSR regular John Doggett submitted a fascinating analysis of the Waikiki Roughwater. As we all read about, or indeed experienced, this year's swim was a real challenge. John responded to the MSR report with
I read the fascinating race report by Bill on the Waikiki
Roughwater Swim. Although I did not go to Hawaii this year, I was
interested in the swim since I have participated for several years in
the past, as I know you have. My first year was 1984 when I was just
starting swimming -- did not belong to Masters yet -- and that year was
one of the easiest swims on record because the current was definitely
with us. The next year (1985) I was swimming with Masters and was a much
better swimmer, but took about 25 minutes longer than the previous year
because the current was definitely against us. It turns out that the
1985 swim was the slowest WRS swim up until this year. This year was
considerable tougher as is shown by the chart in this spreadsheet. Thought you might be interested.
Of course we at the MSR are incredibly interested in all analyses, especially one as fascinating as this. Thanks John!
